3 weeks full of wonderful memories

We visited many places in Boston. For example: National Public Radio, Emerson College, WBUR and Boston Globe etc. What made me excited was that I stood on the spot where Barack Obama stood in Capitol Hill!. Also it was great to visit White House where everyone wants to come.

U.S. Department of State, iEarn, United Planet and Mongolian Education Alliance- Thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity. Also United Planet staffs worked so hard to plan all these things and organize them. Thank you for all the things you did for us.

From the first day in Boston, I had an expectation to know more about American culture, daily life, democracy and freedom of speech etc and, I was excited. Now today, its already a time to go and I have only one day in America.I attended American schools’ classes, and I observed that students are respectful, friendly and open minded. They communicate each other freely. This is what I liked best so far.I think I am lucky to visit America which is the country of freedom and open the new door in front of me. When I come back to Mongolia I want to be more open and communicate with people freely. I know I can do it!

Waking up every morning to the sound of Saraa getting ready for her day was a refershing feeling, that she was excited to see and learn something new about the U.S. and about Boston. My mother would then make her breakfast, my sister would sing with her in the car, and I would keep her close as I’d take her to school with me every morning. To go to school without her will be weird for me, not wondering about where they are and if they’re having fun, if my mom will be picking everyone up that day. Saraa has truly become my little sister, loved by my entire family. We have renamed our guest bedroom “Saraa’s Room”. I don’t just have one little Mongolian sister, I have many. The students are so wonderful and loving, I just feel a strong bond to each one of them. I will never forget all my mongolian siblings.

I go to the school a newspaper club.I learned a lot of new thinks by participating the this program.Foe example personall skills ,basic journalism about first amandment and i improved my english.When i came in Boston we visited really interesting places.And i saw school newspapers ,daily newspapers ,local newspapers and newspapers for social institute.So i think freedom of press really powerful in the USA.When we come back Mongolia I will orginaze debate about first amendment and domecracy.

We visited Boston university, Boston Public schools, MIT, Boston Globe,Harvard university, Emerson college, WERS, Teen Voices, Christian Science Monitor, Mapparium, Museum, Aquarium,and White house. So, We meet Helen Smith and Mr. Scott Brown (Republucan). I like Christian Science Monitor. Because, I have been a lot of photos before. But never met a photographer. So, it was really enjoyable to meet a photographer and talk about how to take good photos.

My experience with my Mongolian friend, Bulga which i hosted was awesome! She always had a smile even when I woke her up at 5 am to go to school. She tried hispanic food, she bowled for the first time, she went trick-or-treating, she went to one of my family’s party and she played with my crazy siblings all night. One of my favorite games we played was Just Dance 2. Also the memory of bowling. My siblings are competitive, so if they didnt strike they would become angry, but Bulga would always cheer them up with her compliments on how well they played. Saying bye to Bulga was hard for my family. My mother and sister cried because they had a strong bond with her. i know my family and I will never forget her and this experience.

I visited a lot of wonderful places and met many amazing people. Among all these activities, the best part of this exchange program was staying with my host family. I was excited to meet famous journalists before we came to Boston. During the meeting with professionals who work in journalism field, I learned so much from them. I liked Helen Smith’s training. During her training I learned how to write an article and how to write news lead. Also I am happy that I learned more about freedom of speech and freedom of press. During my trip here, I made a lot of comparisons and gained much experience in the country of freedom. When I am back to Mongolia, I would love to share my experience I gained here with my friends, my family, my newspaper club mates and my school.

I am very grateful to be one of the lucky few who was chosen to visit Mongolia for three weeks as part of the Mongolian-American exchange program. In Mongolia I learnt much about a culture and country I knew little about, and I’m sure that my experiences in Mongolia will forever shape my perception of the world around me. The culture and history of Mongolia are rich and varied, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the experience was enriching.

Emerson College is the best and famous

There are too many departments of Emerson College just by the beautiful big garden in Boston. Youth Mongolia journalists visited the journalism department of Emerson College that is the famous department of this college.

In here we met Mr. Steaven and he shared his experience with us. He is journalist of Emerson College’s journalism course. Emerson College was established in 1880. He was working as a journalist for 20 years. And he was working in Emerson College for 5 years.

He said:

So ASK to YOURSELF!

-If you want to be a good journalist, what can you do?

Its answer is:

· Look for information in lots of sources

· Criticize yourself

· Be responsible

· Search for information in your surroundings

· Give to people new, unusual, truth, documentary information very quickly

· Reflect a lot of ideas

· Ask yourself “WHY?”

· Never be baseless

· Be objective

· Listen to people

· Search scoop information

· Use new technology

· Feel the reality yourself

“All good journalists use these points. They searched new information all the time in their life.”

He thinks if you can do all of these things then can be good journalist. And he said “Journalism always changes very quickly. So you must make information quickly.”

After talk of Mr. Steaven, Mimi Edmands came in Emerson College. She taught about “How do you use it on Television.” She said “Broadcaster might be actor, reliable, and interesting.

We attended lot of sessions of journalism in Mongolia. But we’d never meet with a broadcaster of television and didn’t talk about “How to prepare television broadcast.” We felt as prepare whole kinds of journalism for us.

And we met Tim Riley. He works in Emerson College as a musician and teaches an online class. Tim Riley said “In American journalist the biggest problem is journalists use information of internet resources. They debate whether it is a good or a bad idea.

Also he said “Nowadays people can find information on the internet. So journalists might find information very quickly. Other people write their information by individual opinions. But journalists must write public information for all people.”

Then we visited to WERS 88. 9 radio station of Emerson College’s students. We visited Mongolian national public radio before, but it was great that is the students work themselves and they have a lot of the present technology.

We all want to study in Emerson College in a journalist class because students have the possibility to practice in TV, radio and online. It was very interesting.

My name is Lorena. I’m 34 years old. I work in the lending department bank. My family large. I have got 2 daughter and 1 son.

2.Please tell me about family traditions that have the most meaning during the autumn, the winter, the spring and the summer?

Family tradition autumn we go apple picking, winter we go to New Hampshire snow sledding, spring we go to the parks and summer we go to the beach and lake.

3. Why did you decide to host a Mongolian student?

I wanted to host a Mongolian student because my daughter Joslin went to Mongolia over the summer and it’s nice to give back and share for lives.

4. I am trying to learn about news media in the United States. What advice can you give about getting to know journalism works in this country?

Help with journalism can be found watching television and going on-line to news blogs.

5. Please tell me about how you and your family got the news when you were my age?

When I was your age my family and I got news by television and newspaper.

6. How do you get the news now?

Now I get my news by television and computer.

7. What are two or three of the most important news events that have happened during your family?

2 important news events that have happened during my life are September 11 when the Twin Towers in New York were hit and the second news event is Barack Obama being elected as president.

8. Tell about a time when you remember your parents talking about a news event ?

I remember my parents talking about the Olympics and also talking about the crime rate.

9. What are some of the news events you and your family have talked about in the past month?

In the past month my family and I have talked about the new president election campaign.

10. In your opinion, what are the strengths and weakness of journalism in Boston ? In the USA?

In my opinion the strengths in journalism in Boston are having advanced technology and some very good reporters.

Journalism has important effects on voting patterns in Boston and the USA because people really on news for information and updates.

Before we came to Boston, we were given a tentative schedule of our trip in the USA. While our Mongolian group was going through the schedule, one place attracted me so much that I wanted to explore more. It was Teen voices because I was curious about how girls my age write articles and work in such wonderful place.
          Finally, the time came and we went to visit Teen Voices. Though, finding teen voice office took several minutes, we went 4 floors up and some of our friends were exhausted, but I was still excited to visit at the office.
          First I expected the Teen Voices office to be bigger, glassy or something very attractive from its appearance just like its broad activities, but it wasn’t. Everything in that office was simple. There were not a lot people who work there.
          During the meeting at the Teen Voices office, we heard a lot of wonderful things they do, they did in the past and they are planning to do. Teen voices magazine is written by for and about teen girls and has submissions from girls worldwide.
          Teen Voices web site for girls shares the positive social changes. It was amazing what they are doing. They have 25-30 teen girls ages between 14-18 from different backgrounds. They write articles about local or global issues and try to be the voice of those who are not heard. Also teen girls are giving advice to teen girls themselves, which is awesome.
         Though teen voice’s working place was not so huge and its staff were not as many as I expected, how they manage all these things is unbelievably wonderful. We learned that appearance doesn’t represent its inside value.

After the meeting, the idea to have such a magazine came to our mind. Since we have no magazine like this in Mongolia why don’t we establish a magazine for girls? Instead of waiting for the change to come why can’t “we” start? We know that it will need so much effort from us but we want to try.

-I am 16.

3. Where do you study /jobs?

-I study at Boston Latin School. And 11th grade.

4. Tell me about your family?

-I have a mother whose name is Anne, a father whose name is Phil, and a brother whose name is Harry. Harry was not born in this family. He was born to a different family who gave him to us legally when he was 2 years old. We all have lived together since my parents were married in August, 1993. We always have other relatives and friends at our house.

5. What do you like sports?

-I like watching baseball games.

6. Do you like songs?

- Yes, I like songs. The song I like the most is a song called, “Tongue Tied.”

7. Do you like singers?

-Yes, I like singers. The singer I like the most is a band called, “Mumford and Sons.”

8. Do you write in the newspaper?

-We read the newspaper, watch the news on television and listen to the news on the radio.

-Brother~ we have talked about the Red Sox scandals because we were so surprised at the baseball players behavior.

Dad~ recently we talked about the death of Steve jobs because of the impact he had on our lives.

13. In your opinion what are the strengths and weaknesses of journalism in Boston? In the USA?

-Brother ~Boston newspapers always write attics on people who have died. I am glad they write them. I do not like how briefly journalists write about important issues.

Dad~ the strength of USA journalism is the speed the news travels.

14. What made you decide to host a Mongolian student?

-Martha~ I love communicating with people who have different cultures.

Brother~ I am excited to spent Halloween with Daariimaa.

-Martha~ you must write about news topics that you are interested in and can make connections to. The bond between article and writer needs to be strong. You are clearly doing great.

-Martha~ Journalists are able to influence voters to vote for different people. News can ruin a political person’s career if bad news about them gets out to voters.

Brother~ I don’t know but I see signs of the names of people running for office all over the place.

-the strengths journalism in Boston is that there is a good newspaper and we have lots of good writers and weakness that people all reading are less and less newspaper and less .
